Save a Home for a Hero Contest

Happy Veterans Day to everyone!

I hope this email finds you and your family safe and healthy.

On this day when we stop for a moment to thank our heroes for courageously keeping us safe here at home, I’ve been thinking about what else our law firm may be able to do to help our veterans in need.

As many of you know, our firm focuses on defending homeowners in foreclosure and fighting to save their homes. We have saved many veterans’ homes over the years and it is always a distinct honor to represent our heroes in court.

Just yesterday, the Tampa Bay Times reported that 8.16 percent of all mortgage loans backed by the Veterans Administration (“VA”) are now delinquent. Our veterans have bravely served this country and are being financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic like most of us. We should not allow our veterans to just get kicked out on the streets after putting their own lives on the line for our freedoms.

Of course, this pressing problem will require a public policy solution, but I do believe we can all do our small part to help our heroes. It is in this spirit that our firm is proud to announce that we will represent one U.S. military veteran in foreclosure pro bono, free of charge. To qualify, the applicant must be a U.S. military veteran in active mortgage foreclosure with limited financial means. The property must be the veteran’s homestead and it must be a Florida property.

We wish we could help every veteran but since we are a small firm with limited resources, we will only be able to represent one for now. As I am sure there will be quite a few applicants, we will do our best to select the most worthy case and represent the client throughout the trial court case, at no charge. This will include representation at trial if the case needs to be tried before the court. Our firm will also pay for any necessary court costs such as court reporter fees.

While this will not solve the overall problem, that is not an excuse to do nothing. Excuses are plentiful and words are cheap. I believe that actions speak louder than words and this is our law firm’s way to do our part to pay at least one veteran back for fighting for the freedoms we enjoy every day.

There are many funny lawyer jokes out there, and even Shakespeare took an interest in this subject, once writing “The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.” While I won’t take issue with Shakespeare’s literary talents, I must disagree on this point. I will always believe, at my core, that lawyers have a higher calling. The law license we have been granted does not simply allow us to make a living. It gives us the power - and the obligation -  to do some good.

For any veterans in foreclosure who would like to be considered, please reach out to our legal assistant, Elaine Prado, at 813-260-4883 or elaine@torrenslawgroup.com. Please let Elaine know that you are calling about the Home for a Hero Contest and she will set up a free telephone call with me.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you and your family have a wonderful Veterans Day.

Best Regards,
